Lidar wind measurements of intra wind farm wake dynamics

Wakes inside and behind a wind farm have a large effect on the wind resource available to downstream wind turbines and other plants in a wind farm cluster. Lidar technology has evolved significantly in the last decade. Commercially available systems are now able to resolve wakes with high temporal and spatial resolution over distances of 10 kilometres and more. Besides, wake dynamics caused by large-scale turbulent structures and transient wind conditions like directional changes can be investigated by ground-, platform-, or nacelle-based measurement setups. Data fusion from different sensors, e.g. multiple lidars or information from lidar, meteorological towers and operational wind farm data, is gaining more importance for both scientific validation of wake models and industrial applications. Examples for the latter include very short-term power forecasting, wind farm control for improved grid integration, resource assessment in the vicinity of existing wind farms and quantification of wind farm cluster power losses.
To improve the detailed characterisation of wakes, especially in new wind farms equipped with turbines using very large rotor diameters, the Early Stage Researcher (ESR) is expected to develop an own approach to enhance the accuracy of long-range measurements. Beside practical aspects like the pointing accuracy over long distances and disturbances by the dynamic inclination of the measurement platform, this can address methodological developments like data filtering and recovery as well as wind field reconstruction and wake modelling. Among others, the ESR will be in direct exchange with an extensive measurement campaign with long-range lidar(s) in an offshore wind farm cluster.
Secondments within the PhD project, i.e. research stays of 4-6 months duration each, are planned at Siemens Gamesa and TNO (The Netherlands).

General information about the Lidar Knowledge Europe (LIKE) project
LIdar Knowledge Europe (LIKE) fosters training and education of young researchers on emerging laser-based wind measurement technologies and its translation into industrial applications. Doppler Lidars (light detection and ranging) that measured the wind in the atmosphere remotely have reduced in price and increased reliability over the last decade mainly driven by European universities and companies serving the growing wind energy industry. This opens the possibility for new applications in many areas. LIKE improves, tests and refines the technology thus expanding these areas of application. LIKE promotes wind energy applications such as wind resource mapping using scanning lidars and control of individual wind turbines or entire wind farms in order to increase energy production and reduce mechanical loads. LIKE maps unusual atmospheric flow patterns over airports in real-time and thus improves the safety of landing aircrafts. LIKE explores wind and turbulence under extreme conditions at the sites of future European bridges paving the road for optimal bridge design. LIKE trains 15 ESRs to an outstanding level at world-leading European academic institutions and industrial companies, thus forming strong interdisciplinary relations between industry and technical sciences. These relations are implemented through employment of the ESRs at academia as well as industry, and through inter-sectoral secondments. Finally, translation of technology into specific applications is emphasised through the implementation of an entrepreneurship training course LIKE partners, particularly industry.

Research environment at ForWind – University of Oldenburg
Wind energy research at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg has gained international recognition by its integration into ForWind - Center for Wind Energy Research of the Universities of Oldenburg, Hanover and Bremen and into the national Wind Energy Research Alliance of German Aerospace Center, Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems and ForWind. At Oldenburg researchers from the fields of physics, meteorology, oceanography and engineering are collaborating at the »Research Laboratory for Turbulence and Wind Energy Systems« centred on wind physics. Laboratory experiments, free-field measurements and high-fidelity numerical simulations are utilized for the description and modelling of wind turbulence, the analysis of interactions of turbulence and wind energy systems and the design of wind turbine and wind farm control. State-of-the-art facilities include three turbulent wind tunnels, sensing equipment for free-field measurements at on- and offshore wind farms and an own high performance computing cluster. Two multi-lidar systems each equipped with three scanning lidars are of particular importance for the present project.

Job requirements and eligibility criteria
Candidates should have a qualified master's degree in Engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in Meteorology, Physical Sciences, Engineering, Wind Energy, Remote Sensing or similar.

The successful candidate is required to have:
  • profound knowledge of at least two of the following three fields: experimental or computational fluid dynamics, statistical data analysis of large data amounts, measurement techniques
  • experience in programming with at least Matlab or Phyton
  • ability to work in an international and interdisciplinary project team and take responsibility for own research goals
  • high motivation and ability to work on a complex research topic
  • fluency in communicating and reporting in English
In addition, the successful candidate should satisfy the following mandatory characteristics at the time of the recruitment:
  • having not more than 4 years of equivalent research experience (i.e. working as researcher after obtaining your master’s degree);
  • having not been awarded a title of PhD before;
  • having not resided or carried out her/his main activity in Germany for more than 12 months in the last 3 years
Salary and contract
The salary according to the German public service salary scale TV-L E13 (100%) is identical to the one of a full-time research assistant. The period of employment is 3 years. Starting Date: 1 January 2020 (preferable) and latest 1 April 2020. The early stage researcher has to be enrolled for PhD at the Faculty of Mathematics and Science subject to academic approval.
