SmartBlades2 research project
Project title: SmartBlades2 – Construction, testing and further development of intelligent rotor blades
Summary:
The SmartBlades2 project is a follow-up project to the SmartBlades project (duration 12/2012 to 02/2016), in which various technologies for the development of ‘intelligent rotor blades’ were investigated. The following general objectives are pursued:
- Demonstration & testing of the different ‘Smart-Blades’ technologies, if possible in the open field or in the wind tunnel.
- Validation of the tools and methods developed in order to achieve a higher degree of confidence in the technologies and their design on the (industrial) application side and thus significantly increase the chance of commercial exploitation.
- Further development of methods and sub-concepts that have proven to be particularly relevant and promising and where there is still a significant need for research.
- Evaluation statements for the sensible application of the technologies examined
- Finalization and monitoring of the structural design to manufacturing restrictions (WP 1)
- Test of a BTK blade on the rotor blade test rig (AP 2)
- Expansion, simulation and adaptation of the operational management and control system for the test facility with demonstration sheets (WP 3)
- Instrumentation of the test facility and the rotor blades (WP 4)
- Carrying out the measurement during operation of the test facility and data evaluation (WP 5)
- Aeroelastic simulations: Comparison with experimental data to validate the models (WP 6)
- Validation of methods for the simulation of transient effects of pitch control on aerodynamics (WP 7)
- Component testing for the evaluation and validation of fatigue models for bonded joints under complex loading (WP 8)
- Aerodynamic effects between rigid blade and flexible trailing edge in rotation (AP 9)
- Effects of unsteady turbulent flow with dynamic front flap (AP 10)
- Controller structure for adaptive controls (AP 11)
- Investigation of the possibilities of retrofitting existing wind turbines (WP 12)
- Project type: Joint project
- Duration: 2016 – 2019
- Financing: Funding by BMWK
- Research partners: Fraunhofer IWES, DLR, WRD Wobben GmbH, GE Aviation Advanced Technology GmbH, Suzlon Energy Limited, SSB Wind Systems GmbH & Co. KG
