At the April meeting of the ForWind Board of Directors, Prof. Dr. Björn Maronga was accepted as a new member of ForWind. Maronga has been Professor of Boundary Layer Meteorology at the Institute of Meteorology and Climatology at Leibniz Universität Hannover since July 2021. Research at the institute is carried out by two working groups and deals with current issues in the fields of radiation, environmental and polar meteorology.
In the field of boundary layer meteorology, the research focus is on the investigation of turbulent atmospheric and oceanic boundary layer flows using large-eddy simulation. The parallelized LES model PALM was developed at the institute and is now one of the most powerful of its kind and is used by a number of international research groups, including ForWind. Current research projects in the field of wind energy research are concerned, among other things, with wake simulations of wind farms in the German Bight in order to minimize performance losses in newly planned wind farms in the vicinity of existing infrastructure.
Since 2019, Björn Maronga has also been Adjunct Professor at the Bergen Offshore Wind Center at the Geophysical Institute of the University of Bergen in Norway.
